about

This piece came from my long standing desire to write a piece based upon text that had an underlying subtext running vertically that thematically ran against or altered the meaning of the horizontal text. I contacted poet Hannah Eagleson about writing something with this in mind and she came up with these three beautiful poems.

"What if the sun that warms will prove to wither?"
With each of these three pieces I sought to emphasize or draw attention to the vertical text in a different way. For this movement the vertical subtext sis emphasized by utilizing a polyphonic texture (multiple melodies) that weave around each other but join together to play the same note at the moment of every sub-textual word or phrase.

lyrics

The moon may wax and wane, but still the constant
Stars will keep their watch, knowing our loves
Are nurtured by their truth, a flame which is not
Hidden from us in the worn days. So lit
By fires afar, which cannot fail in
The impoverished month or vanish in the
Turning hour, we will last longer than the
Earth itself, and grow beyond our soil.

Vertical subtext: First word of each line.
"The stars are hidden by the turning Earth."
