about

This piece came from my long standing desire to write a piece based upon text that had an underlying subtext running vertically that thematically ran against or altered the meaning of the horizontal text. I contacted poet Hannah Eagleson about writing something with this in mind and she came up with these three beautiful poems.

"What if the sun that warms will prove to wither?"
With each of these three pieces I sought to emphasize or draw attention to the vertical text in a different way. For this movement the introduction melody is created specifically for the subtext. Listening to the guitar's intro and singing the words of the title will illuminate this. This melody became the framework moving throughout the piece: When the sub-textual word is sung moving through the horizontal text, the singer HAD to be on the note that represented it in the opening melody. This forces the harmony to move accordingly and granted a license to create atypical harmonic movement to accommodate this. Ultimately this movement has a rather renaissance vibe with a fairly simple accompaniment for the voice.

lyrics

What strength now stands between our hearts
For if our neighbors fail to grow in love
We hold the knowledge of our thriving art
To harness mighty sun, eternal light enthroned above.
Turning light to food, that nourishes each day anew
Our tendrils evergreen, and warms our twining growth
So that our new vines coming now will bloom in virtue
And flourish with each year, always to prove our troth
A dateless love that grows and cannot fear to wither.

Vertical subtext: line 1 word 1, line 2 word 2, line 3 word 3, etc.
"What if the sun that warms will prove to wither"
